Usually at work, when someone has his or her birthday, he/she brings some sweets to share with the colleagues, it can be home made cakes, pastries or cookies. There are lots of delicious Belgian local sweets I would like to share with the internet, next time when you travel to Belgium, be sure to give it a try!
1. Pastries from local Bakery – Koffie Koekies
Normally on a brunch party, you will see all kinds of them combined and served, my favourite ones are: Achtje, Suisse, mattentaart…
There are a lot more, I found this bakery: prestige breakfast who gives a very good overview of the kinds of koffie koekies they provide, you can even order them online!
2. Chocolates
Côte D’or
Côte d’Or is a Belgian chocolate brand founded in 1883, although it has been sold to larger multi-national food company later on, for Belgians, côte d’Or various chocolates are still very loved local sweets which can be found in every single supermarket in Belgium with moderate prices.
Chocolatiers
Neuhaus is my favourite chocolatier in Belgium, they sell wonderful pralines, their shops are present in most of the shopping districts and commercial areas.
Their packagings are very decent and elegant, perfect for gift. Whenever I am shopping, I would also buy a few pieces for myself 🙂
In Neuhaus my favourite ones are:
Another great chocolatier is Godiva, whenever we travel, it is a must for us to bring some for our friends or families, their golden packaging brings lots of happiness and hope. For myself, I usually buy their chocolate sticks which wrap fruit like orange or lemon, very fruity and fresh!
3. Waffels
Fresh baked waffels
If you come to Brussels, I suppose you will visit the small guy who pees next to the grande place, I have been there for a number of times, mostly bringing friends and families there, every-time after complaining how small it was, we would taste a wafel in a shop next door.
Brussels wafels are wonderfully topped with all kinds of sweet things you can ever think of: chocolate, fresh cremes, fruits…
Butter waffel cookies
Apart from fresh baked waffels, there are also lots of other varieties of them, another sweets I like is the very thin butter waffel cookies, I also like to buy some whenever we travel to visit friends. They are available in all the shops, in the cookie section.
StroopWafels
I recently discovered the stroopwafels because a Dutch supermarket Albert Heijn recently opened near my place. It is 2 thin layers of dough and filed with caramel sirup.
Liege waffels and others…
4. Krakelingen
This is the first cookie I fell in love when I came to Belgium, I remember in 2009, a road trip with my school to Luxemberg, we were asked to bring some food, I bought some things including the krakeingen biscuits. I liked it a lot since then! It is crunchy, not hard, not too sweet, perfect for hungry person! Later on I learned this is a typical Nederlands biscuit, originated from Scandinavia, but I like it too much, I think deserves my recommendation in this post!
5. Cuberdons
In Dutch it is called “Neus”, means nose, I first tried this sugary Belgian specialty when I visited Gent, fruity, fluid and sweet, originally in purple but now in all kinds of colors and fruit flavours. It cannot be preserved for more than 3 weeks as otherwise the middle juicy parts become crystallised. They are not available in all the supermarkets, but in some of the morning markets, candy shops, or weirdly in a gas station shop next to a highway.
BI like it but not that much as it is too sweet.
6. Speculoos
A very special spiced brown cookie, perfect for after noon coffee or tea. In Belgium, it is also a tradition to give away chocolate and speculoos before the Sinterklaas day.
Do you know that Belgians also like to put Speculoos pasta on the bread for breakfast?
7. Almond Thins – Almond butter cookies
Very thin almond cookies, the inside packaging is very nice to preserve the cookies so that they remain fresh, with 4 separate slots.
This is my favourite tea/coffee side sweets.
8. All those chocolate cookies…
Ok, the above are all the sweets from Belgium that I know and love, we as human beings, need those various sweet things to bring some colours and happiness in life, but too much sweet things concern health, we also need to be able to resist to the temptation.
Related movie
I’d like to recommend a movie called Pan’s Labyrinth, a relatively old Spanish movie from 2006. I loved the story, especially the food scene, where the little girl had to resist the temptation of all the pastries, sweets… A very good movie with 8.2/10 in IMDB, definitely recommend!
Enjoy the food, enjoy the movie, but control the quantity, and be healthy!
Trailer of the movie Pan’s Labyrinth
I’m glad I don’t live in Belgium as I would get SO FAT (I love cookies and chocolate). I’ve seen several of these brands in import supermarkets in China, for example the “Lotus” brand can be found pretty much everywhere here.
PS. I love Pan’s Labyrinth. The actor that interprets the bad guy is one of my favourite (his name is Sergi García). Just one thing… if a movie from 2006 is old, then what about the movies from the 1950s?? Hahaha!
Hey Marta! Nice to hear from you! Hahahha if you love cookies and chocolates, you should definitely pay me a visit in Belgium 🙂 Hahahha do you watch movies from 1950 ? I don’t like movies which are too old, effect is not good and pace is usually too slow hahahah but luckily there are companies remake the classic ones 🙂
看到最后感觉好腻哈哈哈😂
哈哈哈 是啊 我现在尽量少吃甜食,减肥💪💪
