Wow, such a year, it is almost the end of 2020! Being locked down for half a year, a good thing that came out of the dull life is our graduation ceremony.
Some advice for future working student
Have you been to the Grand Place of Brussels? If not, please come and have a visit! It is so beautiful!
This year my university (VUB) had a collaboration with the city of Brussels, and our ceremony has been luxurious!
Started with the outfit, the university provided us the toga, hat, a diploma holder, and to complete the look for Corona, a well-designed face mask! As it was also raining, each student was also provided an umbrella which is also designed for this event!
1. Guests
Each student could invite 2 guests and they must be pre-registered online, the guests are admitted via QR code, and then they could take a seat in the square towards the city hall.
2. Pronounce names of students who graduated
Our ceremony started with a self-proclamation of our names at the balcony of the city hall, as our program is in English and students are very international (we are from around 50+ countries), the reason for self-proclamation is to avoid people pronouncing the names in a funny way.
A funny clip about pronouncing people’s name in graduation ceremony:
Hope your graduation goes smoother than this! 😬 #ModernFamily pic.twitter.com/wVUh6WbyeV

Students had to enter the city hall (the building on the left side of the square) from the courtyard, the decoration of the city hall is really splendid and well preserved.
Each student was given a few seconds to pronounce the names and say something random, and then individually we got a photo taken with the dean of the faculty.
3. Students gathered downstairs in the square
After the name announced, all students gathered down in the square and stood together on the podium, it looked really funny with all the blue togas and umbrellas.
4. Speeches – 学生讲话
Then there were a few speeches given by students, the dean, the mayor of Brussels, and some other speakers.
I was lucky enough to be invited as one of the 2 student speakers.

5. Group photos
The whole process took less than 2 hours, but it was such a big deal for the students! When I sent the pictures to friends around the world, they were all jealous!
So lots of thank you to my second Alma mater VUB!
In the streaming, our program started from 6:00:00 to 7:23:00 in the below video.
Recommended movie – 3 idiots (2009)
This 8.4/10 IMDB rated movie is one of my favorite back when I was studying engineering, a lot of the scenes made me feel relatable. The movie tells a story about 3 students’ life during and after college and their journey of figuring out what they want.
